(If you ask me, a daily reset is for true self-improvement sickos and choosing to never reset it is the cheap way out. Weekly is the way to go!) I started using Steppin five months ago so I could write a review, but I ended up enjoying it so much that I’m now on a 158-day streak. Some folks even just delete their problem apps during the work day so they can at least concentrate on productivity during business hours. That gets tricky, of course, because accidents and emergencies do pop up, and you may want 24/7 instantaneous access to your phone.

You undo your streak by removing an app from your blocked list or changing your preferences around how many steps give you a minute of app access or how long your banked minutes last before resetting. My earned time resets weekly, meaning steps I took yesterday still apply to today’s banked time, but you can set it to reset daily or never, too. If you’re someone who doesn’t get a lot of time to walk in the day, you can use the app on its lowest settings, trading 25 steps for a minute of app time, and still get the benefits. As your phone or fitness tracker detects steps, they get converted into minutes that you bank and can then convert back into time to unlock your apps. Even just 3 hours a day over the course of year adds up to (and prepare yourself for this) 45 full days on your phone.

Since downloading Steppin, I haven’t given myself more than 10 minutes at one time. For instance, if I open Instagram and set a 10-minute unblock duration, I can leave Insta and fire up Project Makeover within that same time frame. I find myself getting off the bus a few stops early, choosing to walk to the father post office to drop off my Poshmark sales, and generally seeking out more opportunities to get my steps in. A few times this summer, that’s resulted in me opting to walk home from a Saturday night outing instead of taking the bus or calling an Uber.

Even when actively searching for similar material or following creators known for posting it, those platforms did not automatically push such videos to the test accounts. As soon as these accounts were created, the platform started recommending videos featuring suggestive dancing or close-up shots of women’s bodies. Essentially, however Apple Health detects your steps, whether from your phone or wearable, Steppin will detect them, too, since it runs on Apple Health data that you grant it permission to access during setup (unfortunately, that means there’s no Android version at the moment).
